[ jyn's already called down to give jack permission to come up so the concierge gives him the floor number and the elevator whisks him up to jyn and daisy's floor. when he knocks, the door opens to reveal their ridiculously swanky apartment and jyn perched at the counter carefully tending to her herbs while she eats lunch. the sun is shining, the door to the balcony is open and letting in fresh air and the scent of flowers. she has a delicious sandwich she absolutely did not make herself.
[ It's only Jack's second time here, but he remembers it all well enough. The upscale building and rooftop balcony would be difficult to forget, especially in comparison to his own living situation. Granted, his setup is entirely by choice, and he definitely wouldn't feel comfortable in this place, but it's hard not to be impressed by it all the same.
He's been here a few times before to practice using his power with Daisy, so he takes a quick look around as he walks in, but it seems that Daisy and Cassian are out. Without further ado, he approaches the counter where Jyn's waiting. She seems to be more at home than the last time he'd seen her here, when she'd been covered in dirt and scarfing down food like it was going to hop off the table and run away from her. Then again, that was months ago now. ]
Hey.
[ He sets down a small protective container, which houses the implant, onto the counter. ]
I grabbed a few, so if you end up ruining this one trying to figure out what makes it tick, don't worry about it.
[ now she has a pantry literally overflowing with food because it's a house full of babies with food insecurity. do they need 37 jars of peaches? no. but they have 37 jars of peaches and that is important. ]
Where did you get them?
[ she gestures at one of the stools, pushing her herbs away so she has more room in front of her to... boldly attempt to figure this out.
she's good, she knows she is. she's been slicing and duping imperial documents since she was twelve, she'd even counterfeited credits that were so flawless the person she had been working for decided they were too good and some dirty street urchin criminal could not take credit for them.
going to prison for being Too Good is infuriating.
but this is something different enough from her main skill set that she is honestly grateful kriffing this up won't ruin the whole supply. not that she will admit to that gratitude. ]
[ It's not as if Jack expects Jyn to crack this right now. He doesn't mind leaving it with her and finding out the results later on, especially since he assumes she'll want to loop Daisy in on the project too. That being said, he did come all this way, so he doesn't hesitate for long before he takes a seat at one of the stools. ]
The UNA base in New Beijing. That was one of the main reasons I went.
[ He's not convinced that the handling of Judas was the Displaced's most shining moment, though it hasn't come back to bite them yet. It feels like waiting for the other shoe to drop, though. ]
I was only able to get my hands on a few, and had to make a deal with Cassius to get 'em out, so hopefully you can learn something from it.
[ Much as Jack doesn't like to rely on others, he'd known from the start that he'd need someone with more expertise to take the chip apart and analyze it. ]
[ there's no recrimination. jyn can't say shit, she actively defended their right to side with cassius to get whatever they needed. she glances sideways at jack, studying him for a moment, back at the implant. ]
[ Jack doesn't really begrudge Jyn the question, or the awkward way in which she asks it. Of course she would know about what had gone down with Johann, at least in vague terms, if she was Daisy's roommate.
If anything, he's grateful that Daisy hadn't outright told her. ]
jyn fiddles with the implant, holding it thisclosetoherfuckingface to inspect it like she knows the engineering behind it. she only knows a little. the basic basics.
distractedly, ] Can't believe these are in our heads. Gross.
[ Jack had also spent some time inspecting the implants when he first got his hands on them. Not that just staring at it could tell you much, but after all the trouble he'd gone to in order to get it, he'd still been curious. These UNA models don't look that different from the civilian ones, at least not in a way he can wrap his head around.
At Jyn's comment, he lets out a wry huff of a laugh. ]
To put it lightly. At least I agreed to the surgery the second time around, even if it wasn't the best choice I've ever made.
[ There's a pause, and then his eyes flick from the implant up to Jyn's face. ]
No. Thought about it, but there's nothing he could give me.
[ she had no powers to get back, cassius couldn't bring people in or tell her what she wanted to know from her own galaxy. maybe they could have learned something about cassian's back, but he didn't want to deal with cassius so it was a moot point. ]
Stole my own house, stole my promotion from a dead guy, which I guess was thanks to Cassius. [ she'll give him credit for the death. ] Got enough food for ages and if it comes down to it I'll eat Illya. Couldn't think of anything I wanted.
[ Everyone wants something, Jack imagines, but he also happens to know that Jyn can't really go home. She'd implied as much during their first conversation, although he hadn't pushed her for details. Either way, he's not about to judge. ]
I wasn't planning to make one either, but there was no way I was getting away from the UNA base clean with these unless I did, so... it was a snap decision.
[ He'd been blind for a while post-surgery for his troubles, but at least Johann had been telling the truth when he said it would be temporary. Jack sighs and shrugs. ]
Anyway... I guess we'll see if it was the right call.
[ Assuming Jyn or any of her roommates can crack the code. ]
I hadn't thought to make Cassius useful until after.
[ but she can relate to snap decisions, that's pretty much her entire life. using cassius to get information or facilitate an escape with stolen implants would have been a good idea, had she thought of it then. she was too distracted in new beijing anyway.
she sets the implant down. ]
I think I need a brain to shove it in to get it going, but I'll figure out whatever is on this. [ once she can find a brain... ]
[ A brain to shove it in? Both of Jack's eyebrows shoot up at the implication, especially when she says it so casually. ]
How're you gonna manage that?
[ The whole point is that brain surgery really hadn't been the best idea after all (who would've thought?), so he's not sure what Jyn might have in mind here. ]
I... [ she makes a very childish face lest he forget she is a YOUTH ] I don't know yet.
[ the face turns into a small, lopsided smile as she glances at him. ] Don't worry, I don't have any intention of becoming a neurosurgeon. I'll figure something out.
[ she'll have to do a lot of googling. ]
Cassian might know a way, he's made friends at Riverstone. They do cybernetics, same but different.
[ That doesn't sound like much of a plan at all, and Jack doesn't make much of an effort to hide his skepticism about this either. Still, a deal's a deal and they'll have better idea of what to do with the implant than he did, so he'll leave it alone.
Having connections with one of the large corporations is nothing to sneeze at, after all. ]
If you say so. [ He leans back in the stool and then slow eases up and off of it. ] I'll leave you to it, then. [ Suffice to say he's not one to overstay his welcome. ]
[ and cassian is so irritatingly knowledgeable, she knows the second she opens her mouth he will have five options at her disposal and probably a contact at each of those five options because he's very annoying good.
it's meant to be reassuring but jyn is honestly only good with children so. ]

Wouldn't be opposed to it. Sorry for not reaching out. A lot happened.
