I... [ He knows he shouldn't say anything because he doesn't want to worry his friend, but he can't keep it secret. It''ll come out eventually and he'd rather Jack hear it from him. So he's going to do a callback to their first meeting. ]
What year is it for you, Jack?[ Last time, he had said for him it was 2075 ] It's....2076 for me...
[ None of what Jack is reading makes any sense. He distinctly remembers their first conversation, and that Reinhardt had been a year behind him. How could he have gone into stasis for three days, only to now think that a year has passed back home? Home isn't supposed to exist anymore, so what does any of this even mean? ]
Are you saying that you suddenly got a whole year's worth of memories? Did you ask the Orbiters about it?
[ The whole cryo situation just gets stranger and stranger, and Jack has to wonder when it'll be his or Ana's turn to get shoved back into one of those pods. ]
[ He's not the only one. Others have had this happen to them too. The little gnome Pike, for one. ]
That's what I'm saying. Jack...Winston was going to recall us. All of us that were left. I was going to come back. We were going to have it back again. We were going to make a difference and help once more.[ Probably not what Jack wants to ever hear. ]
I...really didn't get a chance to. As soon as I was up again, someone asked me to help them with something. So I couldn't really ask. I don't know if they would tell me if I did ask. I'm sorry Jack. I just thought you'd like to know.
[ Jack isn't surprised that Reinhardt had been whisked away before he could get any real answers, but this entire situation is disconcerting all the same. How were his memories just... implanted like that? Had they been repressed before? ]
I know about the recall.
[ It's hardly a shocker that Reinhardt has decided to respond to it. He never wanted to leave Overwatch in the first place, after all. This is like a second chance for him. ]
If you find out anything about how they pulled it off, I'd like to hear about it. I think it's pretty obvious by now that they're keeping us on a need-to-know basis.
[ He doesn't know if he's a year older or not. Likely. He's likely aged an entire year in 3 days as well
But more than that, knowing that Jack knows about the recall hurts. But he's not going to go down that path again. He knows Jack does what he feels he needs to do. They all do. But he made a promise. Not that it matters anymore.]
If I do find out, you'll be the first I talk to. It does mean one thing though. They can grab us and return us at any time they choose. I know that they've doled out "gifts" as well. To others. So they work in mysterious ways and I wonder why they choose to do things this way. I never liked all this cloak and dagger stuff.
[ To some extent, Jack can relate. "Cloak and dagger stuff" had been Blackwatch's purview, and for all that he'd allowed it and even seen it as necessary, it had come back to bite him in the end. Ultimately he doesn't agree with the Orbiters keeping them in the dark and doing things that contradict each other. Maybe putting them back into stasis is necessary to grant people these "gifts"? But if that's the case, why not just come out and say it? ]
Believe me, I don't like being kept in the dark either. I haven't trusted the Orbiters from the start, but the more I hear about things like this, the more I think that there's a lot more going on here than we're being told.
[ For all that there's tension between them about Overwatch, discussing a conspiracy with Reinhardt feels oddly natural. If there's one thing he knows, it's that Reinhardt can be trusted. ]
[ He can indeed be trusted. And he'll listen to each of those theories. And while he's not the sort of openly distrust people, he does have one small issue. Just the one. ]
I think so as well. They were strong enough, powerful enough, to save that many people. Why couldn't they stop the Storm? And why is this planet the only one that survived? It just strikes me as odd that this singular spot in the cosmos was spared. I want to trust them, Jack. I want to believe they have everyone's best interests at heart. I want to know that they are keeping their promise to protect Brigitte and everyone else as they sleep but a small part of me fears that one day, they could hold those sleeping lives hostage. Do what they want, or else. I...don't like thinking that. I still want to hope.
[ So Reinhardt has been traveling with Brigitte. For a moment Jack wants to ask about it, but he knows that it's better if he doesn't. Still, it's something that he files away. He's seen Torbjörn in one of the pods, but hadn't searched out his oldest daughter.
Still, Jack is almost proud to see that Reinhardt has doubts about the Orbiters. It means that he's learned from past events, and has realized that blind trust won't always get him through the day. Now they're getting somewhere. ]
You're asking the right questions. And I've wondered the same thing. It's a huge bargaining chip that they have, and I'm pretty sure they know that they can use it against us.
[ What else would have made everyone fall so quickly into line? ]
