[ So Ana got all the nice furniture. What does Jack get? Equally practical gifts. A travel sack filled with all two people would need to fuck off somewhere for a while. Tent, bed rolls, campfire cooking supplies, rations. He's kitted the two of them out for like a full month. ]
[ Practical gifts are the best kind of gifts, as far as Jack's concerned. And of course Reinhardt would have pulled out all the stops. He doesn't believe in half measures. All the same, Jack is curious, so he follows up with a text. ]
Here and there. I thought you might want it. I thought it might help you two.
[ He's not going to tell Jack that as per the norm, Reinhardt has gone without to make sure his friends got something nice. He's a lot of silver poorer and he doesn't think the fighting pits are going to let him come back any time soon. ] ]
[ That's how Reinhardt does everything in his life, though. He's always operating at 200%, at the least, and age has done nothing to slow him down. At first Jack had figured that Reinhardt had something to prove, but that sort of worry should have worn off years ago. ]
[ Honestly, at first, he had. Overwatch had wanted Balderich. He had gotten Balder killed. It was his fault that the wrong Crusader ended up in the team. At the start, he had done far too much trying to prove that he could be half the man his old commander had been. He had felt such guilt for it. And sorrow as well, deep painful sadness. He had buried himself in the mission and in proving that he was remotely worthy of his promise to a dying man. But that was years ago. He's had many years to prove that he was worthy of his own, as Reinhardt and not 'Balderich's unwanted replacement'.
What he does now, it's not because he's still trying to prove himself to both his commander and himself. It's because he truly does like and care for both Jack and Ana. He wants them safe and healthy and cared for. He lost them once. He can't always be there to shield them, so in this gift, he can give them something useful that will help them. It's just that simple. It's a gift out of love and respect. ]
Actually, I think I could have done a little more. But I felt you already might have had some things for a Go Bag. This is just making sure you have supplies if you both need it.
[ Jack, Ana, and Gabriel had all made note of how hard Reinhardt had tried back then to make it clear that he was not simply the "consolation prize." Honestly, Jack had never viewed it that way. Back during the Crisis, it had been common for even highly-ranked, experienced soldiers to get gunned down. Fighting an omnic force was a different story from fighting an army of humans, and the reason their original strike team had worked is because they'd learned the right strategies. ]
Yeah, it's basically padding for what we already had, but it won't go to waste.
[ Reinhardt would never take any of it back, no matter how hard Jack shoved it on him, so all he can do is assure him that the gifts will be used, or at least kept close at hand to quell some of their paranoia. ]

Where'd you get all this?
[ And how did he afford it? ]
