You know what I mean.

[ It's true that the two of them had met in the midst of a war unlike any in Earth's history, that they'd been part of something that had brought humanity back from the brink, and therefore complicated had been written into their friendship from the start. But back then, they hadn't argued the way they did now. Neither of them had been this tired, or this angry, or this done with everything.

Jack grunts at the way the mattress shifts when Gabriel sits, but he still doesn't have to look at him if he doesn't want to. He realizes that he shouldn't be difficult when Gabriel is finally having a real conversation with him, but this isn't easy for him either.

When Gabriel pulls out the glass shard, though, Jack can't stop himself. He looks surprised for a brief moment, but of course Gabriel had found the shard and grabbed it when Jack wasn't looking. With the nudge at his shoulder, he's startled into action, slowly reaching out to take the shard from Gabriel.

He handles it carefully, not wanting to get cut by the sharp edges, and watches the brief scene that plays out over the glass. It's the two of them during the Crisis, sitting on the floor in some bombed-out bunker in the dead of night, playing cards and joking around as if they didn't have a care in the world, even though everything was coming down around their heads. He watches it repeat a few times, then sets it down on the mattress between them. ]

Yeah. It almost feels like a different life, doesn't it.

[ Gabriel is much closer in time to being a shadowy villain that wants to murder him, than he is to being the young man in that glass. ]
