THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Soldier: 76 (Jack Morrison)
Series: Overwatch
Canon Point: Post Reflections comic
Character Age: He doesn't have an exact age, but he's likely somewhere in his 50's.
Background: "We're all soldiers now."

Personality:
The man Jack Morrison is now and the man he used to be are very different people, at least at first glance. Jack was shaped by the many years he spent as Strike Commander of Overwatch. He was a strong and dedicated leader who fought for peace, for innovation, and for the future with every ounce of his being. He gave all of himself to Overwatch and endured the political maneuvering and red tape that it involved even when it wore him down and even when the decisions he had to make were nearly impossible ones. He would reach out to his agents for their opinions in these situations, making himself available to hearing their thoughts even when he was the one who'd be under fire for the choices he'd make under their advisement. He cared deeply for his people and instilled his ideals in them as best he could. Despite all this, the world eventually turned on him and all of his hard work literally blew up in his face.

When the explosion at Swiss HQ happened, a part of Jack Morrison died, if not all of him. In the aftermath, Jack remains as determined as he'd been before, but now he's pushing for a different cause: to uncover what truly happened to the organization that meant so much to him, at any cost.

His newfound identity of the vigilante, Soldier: 76, allows Jack to operate with a ruthlessness he never could before. He's unfettered as he carries out his mission, breaking into facilities or bombing financial institutions with little care for the destruction that he's left in his wake. After decades of having to play by the rules, he's clearly done with worrying about that.

This isn't to say that Jack is completely unhinged and lashing out however he can. There's still a purpose to his actions. He has good reason to believe that there was a conspiracy that brought down Overwatch and that it was, at least to some extent, an inside job. Knowing that there was corruption within his own organization, he has to know who's really responsible for Overwatch's downfall. So while he may be acting on paranoia to some extent, it's justified paranoia. It's also specifically noted that he's left people alive during raids he's made on old Overwatch facilities. As much as the media might consider him a vigilante, Jack thinks of himself as "just a soldier." The fight has never ended for him, and he doesn't believe that it ever will. He's ready to keep fighting until there's nothing left in him anymore.

There's no denying that Jack's a good person underneath his current gruff, prickly, oftentimes rude exterior. While he does everything in his power to keep people at arm's length and carries himself in an intimidating manner, the backbone of his morals shows through at pivotal moments. When he's breaking up a gang and beating the crap out of them, he realizes that there's a young girl caught in the crossfire. When faced with the choice of chasing after the gang members or shielding the girl from a grenade, he opts for the latter. When the girl asks him why he saved her, his answer is "old habits die hard, I guess." He also secretly makes sure that she makes it home safe; underneath the gravely voice and intimidating appearance, he has a heart. There are other parts of him that remain the same, too. The two people who knows him best make comments to that nature, Reaper remarking on how he's "always rushing in," speaking to Jack's impulsiveness, and Ana's statement that "[he's] so hardheaded [he] wouldn't know how to die." He has a stubborn streak, a part of him that simply won't give in.

Jack is purposeful in not acknowledging his old identity. He covers his face wherever he goes, and has made no effort to reach out to any of his previous Overwatch agents, even though some of them are easily accessible. He's bitter about how things ended for Overwatch, all the betrayals wrapped up in its fall, and the fact that Winston and Tracer are attempting to revive it. If it all went so badly before, what would make it any better this time? ("Bring back Overwatch -- what's the point?" is one of his voice lines.)

While the in-game voice lines are not strictly canon, they do give insight into characterization, and Jack's tend toward being impatient, urgent, and overbearing. ("Quit screwing around and get ready to move!" "Get out of my way or I'll run you over.") In the middle of a mission or a firefight, he isn't likely to hold anyone's hand. He just wants to get the job done. The majority of his reactions are rude or hostile. Again, this is mainly a mechanism to keep others a safe distance away.

That being said, Jack hasn't completely lost his humanity as he's been consumed by his need to uncover the truth and get his revenge. When he reunites with Ana, he's able to joke around with her at least a little, and the fact that he was looking for her at all says a lot. She grounds him in a way no one else can, having been his second-in-command for years and one of the people he'd turned to for advice time and time again. They've been through countless fights together and the fact that she's willing to help him even now means a great deal. For the moment, she remains the one person he can be relaxed around. Even when he moves into her safehouse, though, he takes up only a small amount of space, not willing to really settle in.

The other person who is a defining force in Jack's life is Gabriel Reyes, who's now operating under the name "Reaper." As Jack's commander during the war and then decades-long friend after that, Jack's feelings toward him are particularly complicated. It's implied that their friendship slowly deteriorated over time and that the explosion that "killed" them both was a result of some sort of confrontation between them. They each feel betrayed by the other, and it's no secret that Reaper wants Jack dead now. Jack also feels an obligation to put a stop to Reaper's activities, and it's shown that he and Ana are actively searching for him. No doubt Jack wants some sort of explanation for Gabriel's betrayal, some way to understand how he's become such a monster.

Jack's lived a long, taxing life. As a result, he's turned from the sort of person who inspired people around him to be their best selves into a hollowed shell of himself; embittered, full of anger and a whole host of unresolved issues and trauma. But there is one thing that still remains the same: he will never stop fighting.

Powers/Abilities:
Jack is the product of something called the Soldier Enhancement Program, meaning he's a super-soldier a la Captain America. So:

Enhanced strength. His punches are enough to send someone flying into a wall. There's not exact numbers given to this, so I'll try to be reasonable about what his limits are.
Enhanced speed. One of his skills in the game is his sprint. He's fast and doesn't seem to tire easily. (His running doesn't even have a cooldown!)
Enhanced agility. He literally runs / jumps up the side of a fairly tall wall.
Enhanced durability. He takes a shotgun blast to the back and isn't completely destroyed by it. He gets healed soon after and keeps fighting.
Weaponry/tech:
Pulse rifle: This is a prototype weapon that fires both regular ammunition and helix rockets, which can be thought of as a mini rocket blast that does a good chunk of splash damage. Direct hits are devastating.
Tactical visor: That thing he wears on his face. It has an auto-aim feature and is also an environmental scanner that can pick up things like heat signatures, etc.
Biotic field: A canister that he can place on the ground and activate to create a sort of healing circle that will mend the wounds of anyone inside of it.

Power Nerfs:
None of his powers are game-breaking, so he should be fine to stay as he is!

Inventory:
• The clothes on his back, including his "76" jacket and the body armor he wears beneath it.
• His visor.
• Six biotic field canisters. (If this number needs to be smaller, let me know!)
• His pulse rifle, which will be his one allowed weapon. (Let me know how much regular ammunition / rockets he'd be allowed to have! I assume whatever can fit in the barrel?)
• A photograph of him, Gabriel, and Ana when they were younger.

Incentives:
76 would definitely want some proof that his world was actually gone, whatever they could show him. He still might not believe it at first, but he doesn't want to take them just at their word. Ensuring the safety of those who are still in cryo-stasis would also make him at least a little more cooperative. On the other side of that coin, there are some unsavory types that Jack might want information from, from his world. If he's told that he could get access to those people once they're awake, that would also appease him.
